Aaron Gwin and Rachel Atherton win round 3 of the UCI Mountain Bike World Downhill Cup in Leogang

Saalfelden Leogang in Salzburger Land, Austria, June 14th 2015 – Aaron Gwin stole the show in Leogang after winning the Men Elite race, with no chain! Rachel Atherton also had a fantastic day, winning her first ever World Cup in Leogang. This unbelievable day of racing rounds off the 2015 Out of Bounds Festival in Saalfelden Leogang. Watch Aaron Gwin’s amazing run and more race highlights here: win.gs/CrazyChainlessRun

The action began with a spectacular aerial show above Bikepark Leogang by Red Bull Air Race pilot Hannes Arch. As the racers began to come down, the clouds started to roll in and the wind got stronger. These tough conditions suited today’s Women Elite winner, Rachel Atherton (GBR). “I’ve been trying to win here a long time and I think today is the day when it started to rain so… I am really happy and really tired” – said Rachel Atherton. The women’s race was close, with Tahnee Seagrave (GBR) firmly in the hot seat after a pelting run. French rider, Emmeline Ragot looked strong and finished in third. Unfortunately, last year’s winner, Manon Carpenter was disqualified for crossing the tape and missing a gate. She will hope to score more points at round 4 in three weeks.

After the Women Elite, the men took to the Speedster track in Bikepark Leogang. Little did the ten thousand live spectators who lined the tapes and finish area realize what they were about to witness the most determined run in downhill history. Loic Bruni held the hot seat for a long time, then the top 10 riders came flying down and one-by-one, the pack was ruffled. But the man of the hour was Aaron Gwin who stormed out the gate, losing his rear derailer. On course without a chain, the American athlete opened the brakes and charged down the track to victory. “Last weekend was an awesome result and a pretty tough weekend. Leogang has been a lot better, I felt really good the whole weekend. The track is pretty good, you don’t need to pedal much so I just tried to tuck in and charge” – commented Aaron Gwin. This is the second time the World Cup leader has pulled a rabbit out of a hat after his bare rim run, right here in Leogang just last year. Aaron’s run today in Saalfelden Leogang will stay in the history books for many years to come.

The 21-year old Australian rider, Connor Fearon scored his best ever World Cup result finishing in second place. His run was riddled with high and low lines which formed a fast ride down the new Speedster track. Remi Thirion (FRA) came across the line incredibly fast and took the hot seat but eventually, his day in Leogang finished in third position. A great result for the Frenchman. Troy Brosnan (AUS), Greg Minnaar (RSA) and Gee Atherton (GBR) took the following three positions and will look to improve at the next stop in Lenzerheide, Switzerland on July 5th.

After two incredible seasons where the history books in Men's Downhill racing have been re-written several times, UCI World Number 1, Aaron Gwin (USA) has just confirmed his recent re-signing with Trek World Racing for the next 3 years. Aaron Gwin Wraps Up The World Cup Title With One Race Remaining

By taking 5th place at Round 6 of the UCI World Cup, Aaron not only won his 2nd World Cup Overall title in as many years, but he also maintained his 100% record of World Cup podium results, 13 from 13 starts with Trek World Racing, and a record 14 in a row when the final round of 2010 is taken into account. Furthermore, the Trek Session race bike has scored an impressive 35 World Cup podiums since the start of 2009, more than any other bike model.

Having won 4 of the 6 races on offer so far this season, it seems logical that Aaron Gwin would have wrapped up the season early, and become the f irst to score back-to-back titles since Nico Vouilloz (FRA) in the late 90's, but mathematically it wasn't that straight forward. Both Greg Minnaar (RSA) and Gee Atherton (GBR) have been equally consistent so it was a matter of trying to limit the damage after a qualifying run crash nearly brought Aaron’s weekend to an early close.

The penultimate round of the 2012 UCI World Cup in DH was at a brand new venue, Val d'Isere (FRA) on a course which presented a number of challenges. It was short, at around 2mins 20secs, and this means errors of any kind were not forgiven. The limestone strewn down the length of the course was sharp and sliced many a tire and rider. Aaron and Justin both suffered injuries requiring stitches. Justin's injury on his left arm actually required the handy work of a plastic surgeon to stitch torn muscle inside the injured arm, as well as stitches to close the wound. Aaron's right hand was cut deeply and required 5 stitches, an injury he played do wn before the final but in reality, was a tough one to cope with on this course.

Aaron said: "I have no excuses for my 5th today. I had a pretty good run. For how I felt with the hand injury, I'm happy. To win the overall again, it's so amazing, especially after this weekend. I came in feeling good and kinda had a bonehead moment in qualifying—hurt myself a little bit with that. It was better than I thought it was going to be in the finals but I just got a little tired at the bottom. So I had to back it down to make sure I stayed on and I kinda backed it down too much, but it still worked out. Everyone loses some and wins some. I have lost many more in my career so I'm just stoked to be up here in the black leader jersey for 2012."

Aaron takes a 260 point lead into the finals in Norway in mid-September, with a maximum 250 points available. Between now and then, there are the World Championships. The Men's Downhill World Title hasn't been in the hands of an Americ an since his team mate and Trek World Racing staff member Myles Rockwell in 2000, so it's understandable that the goals for the season have now shifted to Leogang, Austria, in about 4 weeks from now.

Top 10 For All TWR Downhillers At 2012 Sea Otter

Aaron Gwin led the way with a 3rd place, closely followed by Neko Mulally joining him on the podium for 5th. Justin Leov was also in the mix with a 7th showing everyone that on this course our team had the greatest combined horse power of the weekend.

The Sea Otter Downhill course is notoriously lacking in topography and for this reason the riders opted to run their Enduro bikes, the superb Trek Slash 9. We are very fortunate to have committed sponsors who not only helped us with the extra equipment to allow the Trek Race Department to build these bikes up specifically for the Sea Otter event, but Shimano also provided all three riders with the brand new Saint Group-Sets to race on. With the top 5 in the final results including power house riders like race winner Jared Graves (AUS) as well as Mick Hannah (AUS) and Brian Lopes (USA), it was great to see Neko so close to his mentor team mate in that top 5.

Aaron said: "I had an awesome time this weekend. Sea Otter is always one of my favorite races of the year. The atmosphere is always cool and the amount of people who showed up to see us was crazy. I rode my Slash this weekend since the course was pretty flat, that thing is a blast! My race run went pretty good too, times are always tight and the pedaling makes you hurt! Overall it was a fun weekend and solid results for the whole team. Thanks to everyone for coming out!"

Neko said: "I was really happy with how our equipment worked this weekend. The Slash was the perfect bike for Sea Otter's downhill track and the new low knob tires we had from Bontrager m ade the bike incredibly fast. Getting a chance to ride all the components in the new Saint group-set also felt great. I put down a solid run in the final, but I feel the bikes we had helped a lot."

Justin said: "I felt a little off today with my run. My fitness is great I just need a little fine tuning. On the positive side my bike was feeling great all weekend with the new tires and Saint group-set. A noticeably quieter ride with the derailleur and much faster shifting with the new Saint shifter." The team now heads north to Port Angeles, Washington State, for the opening round of the US MTB Grand Prix, where they'll be back on their Session 9.9's.
