2012 POC Eastern States Cup Last Chance For Glory Enduro

The POC Eastern States Cup, POC Sports and E-Thirteen are excited to present the First Annual “Last Chance For Glory” POC Downhill Enduro Race at Plattekill Bike Park on November 10-11, 2012. This event is a great way to end the mountain bike race and riding seasons. It’s the “Last Chance” for racers and riders to get together for a unique and fun race weekend in 2012. Plattekill Bike Park is one of last DH MTB resorts still in open this year. Last season Plattekill Bike Park was operating into December, this year the resort will keep operating as long as weather permits.

The POC Eastern States Cup and Plattekill have partnered to offer a unique racing format that is sure to please racers and garner the attention of the MTB racing industry. The plan for this USA Cycling inscribed race is 2 timed runs on Saturday and 2 timed runs on Sunday, total fastest time wins. One-day entries will be available for time only. Annual or One Race USAC Licenses will let you race any class including the Pro/Open Class. The Pro/Open classes will split up to $1600 in cash and the amateurs will vie for high-end sponsor prizes. The Pro/Open format encourages the fast Cat1 racers to compete with the pros for the cash awards. POC is offering a $100 cash bounty to the fastest non-USAC pro in the Pro/Open class.

The unique format will keep racers busy all weekend while testing their DH skills and endurance. Total race time will approach 30 minutes. Unlike traditional enduro races the riders will use the ski lift for every race segment. Starts will have short intervals and passing will be part of the fun. The tracks will be long, fast and fun with some Plattekill steepness mixed in. They have been selected for their fun, length and equality between DH and AM bike designs. There will be a pedal section and a short uphill on both tracks to challenge racers. Total uphill is less than 2% and those sections are right after long fast downhill sections. Carry enough speed and pedaling will be an option. The Saturday and Sunday tracks will feature different unique finishes that will test the racers and provide a fun time for spectators.

2012 POC Eastern States Cup Killington and Mount Snow

The POC Eastern States Cup Mountain Bike Downhill Championship Race Series completed Series race #7 this past weekend at Killington Resort, VT. The racers managed to miss the forecasted rainstorms all weekend, however it did rain hard Saturday night. Changing track conditions had racers trying to figure out tire combinations that would get them a win. A new steep off camber section of the track proved very challenging, especially with the conditions changing from dusty to muddy.

Racers that achieved a podium this weekend really earned it. Adam Morse took his second pro win of his career, Phil Kmetz finished second in his first race back from an injury, Killington favorite, Jordon Newth finished third in his first ever pro podium and Alex McAndrew secured his first pro podium with a solid fourth place finish. A special shout out goes  to Cat 2 19-29 first time racer Zach Cayton that won the POC Speed Challenge and set the fastest speed all day at 42 MPH. Additionally Andrew Wegiel won his first USAC DH race in a strong under 14 class.

The POC ESC visits Mount Snow for the third VT State Championship event, this coming weekend August 4-5, 2012. Mount Snow features the best and longest beginner trail in the east.. Mount Snow is methodically transforming the mountain bike park into one of the best in the country. Their next project was just started; it’s a top to bottom “slope style” trail that will please all the jumpers out there. Those trails are being added to the existing network of natural terrain trails.

Mount Snow put together for a great track a few weeks ago and more of the same, including the infamous “YARDSALE” section. Mount Snow cut a new trail from the bottom of the YARDSALE to the finish, filled the mud pit with boulders for a great new rock garden and added jumps and berms for the racers!

Mount Snow has a “Music on the Mountain” event going on Saturday evening, $35 for adults and $15 for children 10 and under, but The POC ESC will be offering all racers $10 off, if purchased at registration. The mountain is going to have lift service bringing people to the summit where a BBQ (included), cash bar, and “The Edd” a local blues/rock band will be playing.

Twenty-three women racers are in the running for the Loeka Women’s Challenge. The top 4 women will split $1000 at the finals in October. There are still a lot of races left to score points. Please check out al the details and standings at

2012 POC Eastern States Cup NH Stop Updates

The POC Eastern States Cup visited New Hampshire for series races #3 at Attitash, and #4 Pats Peak on the past two weekends. In typical New England fashion, the weather was at two extremes. It was cold, rainy and windy at Attitash, while Pats Peak’s weekend was sunny, hot and dry. Great turnouts at both events prove the hardiness of East Coast racers.

The Course at Attitash was challenging in the wet conditions. Mud, slippery roots and rocks on the steep, tight trails made the descent difficult to get an error free race run in. The racers that made the least mistakes and kept their momentum were on the podium. Congratulations are in order for all racers for battling the elements and making it to the finish line.

Voncooper Racing dominated the men’s pro field at Attitash taking the top two positions. Phil Kmetz and Gavin Vaugn ended up less than a second apart with a 2:56.31 and a 2:56.53 respectively. Australian Matthew Dodd was 6 seconds back with a 3:03.27.Katelyn Parhiala took the women’s pro win in some very difficult conditions.

While Pats peak is not the tallest mountain on the POC ESC calendar, it has a terrific track. It’s plenty steep, and makes the most of the terrain that is available. The track was a solid mix of open slope and technical woods sections. It was full of rock gardens and roots with a few good drops to boot. The weekend weather was exceptionally good. Pats Peak POC ESC stop featured a best of two run format, giving racers a safe, solid run, and an all out run as well.

Track conditions were dry and dusty, amazing considering the deluge that dumped some 7 to 8 inches of rain on New England last week. The course was incredibly physical, having three rock gardens and two moderate drops.  Despite it being relatively short, it did a good job zapping energy out of the racers, and was very well received.

Our visitors from Australia had the strongest showing for the weekend, with Matthew Dodd taking the win for the Pro Men with an astonishing 1:57 on his second run, besting his first run by two seconds. Matthew was the only racer to break the 2 minute mark, twice. Ben Moody did some incredible riding this weekend and ended the day with second place with a 2:00 on his second run and 2:04 on his first run. Aussie Jesse Beare took third with a 2:05 on his first run and a 2:00 on his second Run. It was a big weekend for Stephanie Levasque Sowles as she took he first Pro Women win with a 2:42 in both runs.

Another great weekend of POC ESC racing, the event had great atmosphere with the MTB festival. Thanks Pats Peak for all the hard work and fantastic course.

After four straight weekends of racing the series takes this weekend off before ESC #5 Mount Snow. Mount Snow is a racers favorite and the course for this race will be new. For more details on The POC ESC and the Mount Snow race, please visit www.easternstatescup.com
