2012 Crankworx

GoPro puts you behind the bars in this course preview for the Dual Speed & Style presented by AVID. Kelly McGarry and Carson Storch run the course, the Finals are at 6pm PDT. Live webcast at www.crankworx.com.

On August 11, 2012 the Dual Speed & Style presented by AVID had it's Whistler debut. Britain’s Brendan Fairclough, a rider widely recognized as one of the most well-rounded racers on the DH circuit, ended up in the final with Spain’s Andreu Lacondeguy, one of the world’s best known freeriders. Lacondeguy, who actually has history battling the clock as a DH racer, gave Fairclough a run for his money but in the end pushed too hard and ended his race in a spectacular cloud of dust while the British World Cup racer sailed over the finish line.

In the battle for third place two freeriders were pit against each other; American Kyle Strait who qualified first yesterday, and Sweden’s Martin Soderstrom. Soderstrom was pulling out Joyride-worthy tricks in every heat but in the small final was bucked on a roller and fell, giving an easy finish to Strait.

WHISTLER, BC August 11, 2012 – The invitational Dual Speed & Style presented by AVID was a huge success with the inaugural Whistler event filling Whistler Village, while thousands more tuned into the live webcast powered by Red Bull Media House.

Britain’s Brendan Fairclough, a rider widely recognized as one of the most well-rounded racers on the DH circuit, ended up in the final with Spain’s Andreu Lacondeguy, one of the world’s best-known freeriders. Lacondeguy, who actually has history battling the clock as a DH racer, gave Fairclough a run for his money but in the end pushed too hard and ended his race in a spectacular cloud of dust while the British World Cup racer sailed over the finish line to take gold.

In the battle for third place two freeriders were pit against each other; American Kyle Strait, who qualified first yesterday, and Sweden’s Martin Soderstrom. Soderstrom was pulling out Joyride-worthy tricks in every heat but in the small final was bucked on a roller and fell, giving Strait the bronze.

Pro freerider Cam McCaul, who lent his expertise as an announcer at the Dual Speed & Style, feels that going fast and having the ability to pull multiple variations of tricks is going to be the type of riding that will prevail in future rounds of Speed & Style.

“Andreu was going up against a World Cup racer so he had to push his speed limits beyond probably what was comfortable for him,” says McCaul. “That race was his to lose but Andreu actually had the speed to stay with Brendan, and the tricks to take the win, if he could have held on. You have to keep within 1.2 seconds in the ‘speed’ area to take the win with ‘style’.”

Dual Speed & Style is a new event on the freeride mountain bike scene. Riders race through a dual course head-to-head for time and earn .6 second deductions for the most stylish tricks pulled on the mid-course booters. Partly influenced by motocross and then brought to life by Kyle Strait’s glory run through the dual course in Whistler during Crankworx in 2011, the SRAM Dual Speed & Style in Les 2 Alpes on July 12, 2012 was the first Speed & Style event organized by Crankworx with Cam Zink taking the win. Judging by the crowds gathered today for the Dual Speed & Style presented by Avid, the event is an exciting addition to the world of freeride competition.

An exciting new addition to Crankworx Whistler’s event calendar is the UnOfficial Whip Off World Championships. The event took place on the Whistler Mountain Bike Park’s gigantic Crabapple Hits. There are no rules in this event; the biggest, most stylish whip takes home the $1,000 cash prize and American Tyler McCaul was the man to do it today.

Thomas Vanderham pulled the second best whip, MVP went to Brendan Fairclough and Cam Zink got an honourable mention. The “best whip not brought back” was Bernard Kerr and on the women’s side Lorraine Brancher came away with kudos. Other titles included in the grassroots event was “best AM whip” pulled by Chris Young, highest air to Jamie Goldman and “best scrub” to Ian Morrison.

The Air Downhill took over the Whistler Mountain Bike Park with a sold out field of competitors ripping down the most famous DH course in the world, A-Line. Elite racers from all over the globe tested their skills to try to take home one of the most coveted medals of Crankworx. Canadian Steve Smith won the Men’s Pro Category with a Crankworx Air Downhill course record of 4:07.79 while Emmeline Ragot of France won the Pro Women’s category with an incredible time of 4:35.25

For the third time in a row, at the Ultimate Pump Track Challenge presented by Rock Shox, defending champs in both the Pro Men’s and Pro Women’s categories kept their titles. Mitch Ropelato and Jill Kintner took the wins for the third time in as many years at Crankworx Whistler.

It was a new track in a new venue but the story stayed the same, Mitch Ropelato (USA) stayed on top to cinch the title; with Troy Brosnan (AUS) in second and Cody Johnson (USA) in third.

Jill Kintner (USA) pulled in first against second place Micayla Gatto (CAD) while Melissa Buhl (USA) took third.

Pump tracks, an endless loop of steeply banked corners, doubles, gaps and rollers, have grown steadily in their popularity. This year the pump track was moved from the Whistler Mountain Bike to Whistler Olympic Park to create a compact and spectator-friendly arena in the heart of the village. It is estimated over 4,000 spectators gathered to watch the head to head showdowns as riders pumped through the track’s whoop-dee-doos and berms.

Tomorrow’s action at Crankworx Whistler includes the Red Bull Joyride Qualifiers getting underway at 1:30-3pm. Then from 6-8pm the GIANT Dual Slalom will showcase exciting head to head race action at the base of the Whistler Mountain Bike Park. Both events will be live webcast at www.crankworx.com.

Keep up to date on all things Crankworx through crankworx.com, Facebook.com/crankworx and make sure to follow @crankworx on Twitter.

The village-wide expo and demo zone will also be hopping so make sure to check out the Jeep® Rocks and Roads course where visitors will be able to experience the vehicle's unparalleled capabilities while manipulating obstacles that demonstrate the wild ride that only Jeep® can deliver. The course and on-road test drive includes a stability ramp, a boulder crawl, a log pile and a 16-foot dirt mountain to demonstrate traction. The test drive area will run until August 19, 2012.

WHISTLER, BC August 16, 2012 – Today’s Teva Best Trick Showdown at Crankworx Whistler had all the ingredients for an awesome competition; sunshine, steeze and lots of cold hard cash. The riders brought their bag of tricks and laid them all out for the huge crowd assembled at the bottom of the Joyride course.

In Session One everyone was just getting warmed up when Jordie Lunn launched a huge cork 720. Lunn’s trick held it’s own against impressive tricks from slope riders including Martin Soderstrom, Yannick Granieri and Thomas Genon. For his efforts early on in the game Lunn rode away with $4,000.

At Session Two of the Teva Best Trick Showdown the riders stepped things up at the Bud Light Cabin step down. Tom van Steenberger executed a front flip tuck no hander to take home the $4,000 on the second feature of the event.

The Teva Best Trick Showdown is a peer-judged, two-session, best trick jam where the winner of each session comes away with $4,000. With the riders getting more mileage in on the Joyride course and getting dialed in on the jumps they will be good and ready to unleash their talents to the world on Saturday, August 18 at the Red Bull Joyride.

Tomorrow’s action at Crankworx Whistler includes more slopestyle with the Red Bull Joyride Qualifiers getting underway at 1:30-3pm. Then from 6-8pm the GIANT Dual Slalom will showcase exciting head to head race action at the base of the Whistler Mountain Bike Park. Both events will be live webcast at www.crankworx.com.

WHISTLER, BC – August 17, 2012 – For the second year in a row, Red Bull Joyride—a diamond stop of the Freeride Mountain Bike (FMB) World Tour—charges into Whistler, British Columbia, with the most progressive slopestyle mountain bike competition on a course designed by professional athletes, for the athletes. Today, fifteen athletes showed off their techniques and nailed their biggest tricks with two full-course runs to wow the judges and get one of the eight spots for tomorrow’s finals. Brett Rheeder from Mount Albert, Ontario, who had an amazing season this year in slopestyle, came first in today’s qualifiers with 88.60 points. “My run went pretty good today. A lot of braking was required but everything worked out. I’m looking forward to tomorrow,” said Rheeder after qualifying today.

The top eight athletes who qualified this afternoon will join the top 10 pre-qualified riders who ranked in the top six from Red Bull Joyride at Crankworx Whistler last year and the top four athletes in the 2012 FMB World Tour’s 52 week ranking. All fifteen riders had hopes of competing in the anchor event of Crankworx Whistler on Saturday, August 18, 2012, but only the top eight secured their spot into the gravity-fed, season-defining freeride mountain bike competition. Red Bull Joyride judges observed the two, full-course qualifying runs and ranked the riders based on the best score achieved of the qualifying runs.

Top eight athletes from today’s qualifiers:

- Brett Rheeder (Mount Albert, ON) 88.60 points
- Antoine Bizet (France) 81.20 points
- Casey Groves (New Zealand) 80.40 points
- Kelly McGarry (New Zealand) 75.80 points
- Sam Dueck (Chilliwack, BC) 70.40 points
- Jack Folgelquist (USA) 67.60 points
- Andreu Lacondeguy (Spain) 66.00 points
- Leo Delfour Barsacq (France) 63.80 points

Ten athletes pre-qualified:

- Brandon Semenuk (Whistler, BC)
- Cam Zink (USA)
- Anthony Messere (Surrey, BC)
- Greg Watts (USA)
- Geoff Gulevich (North Vancouver, BC)
- Cam McCaul (USA)
- Martin Söderström (Sweden)
- Sam Pilgrim (Great Britain)
- Thomas Genon (Belgium)
- Yannick Granieri (France)

All eyes on Semenuk
With only five riders who could stand in the way of the current FMB World Tour leader, all the pressure is on Brandon Semenuk who is capable of securing the title at Red Bull Joyride. If Semenuk places first tomorrow, he can be crowned FMB World Tour winner, taking home the golden Camelbak Better Bottle for the second year in a row. On Saturday, August 18, the best slopestyle athletes in the world will show everyone what next level riding looks like. With “Diamond” level FMB points and a $25,000 cash purse for first place alone, the best of the best will be on course. The level of difficulty of the Joyride course and the high level of talent that competed earned the event a ‘Diamond’ rating, one of only two worldwide, on the Freeride Mountain Bike circuit. Diamond stops are the highest rating on the tour and garner the heaviest weighting of overall points.

WHISTLER, BC – August 18, 2012 – The level of difficulty of the Red Bull Joyride course, designed by the athletes for the athletes, and the high level of talent that competed tonight blew away the judges and the crowd all night long. Over 25,000 wide-eyed fans were on-hand to witness 19-year-old Thomas Genon of Belgium claim the top step of the podium at Red Bull Joyride, the anchor event of Crankworx Whistler 2012. In second place was Red Bull athlete Martin Soderstrom of Sweden and in third was American Cam McCaul. With this win, all three athletes earn themselves an automatic invite to come back to compete for the next three years.

Wind was a factor today but the riders chose to battle it out and threw down an impressive array of tricks on multiple lines of the highly trickable, rider-designed course built just for Red Bull Joyride in the Whistler Mountain Bike Park. "This might be my favourite slopestyle course at Crankworx, ever," says third place finisher McCaul. "I love the big jumps, huge drops and technical features."

Thomas Genon, a relatively unknown rider from Belgium, rode extremely clean and strong; executing high-risk tricks including the only backflip onto the Bud Light Cabin the entire night. "I was fixing my music at the top of the run and someone came over to tell me that I won the comp," says Genon, who seemed to still be processing his win at the press conference following the event.

The evolution of slopestyle
"Today we saw an incredible crowd turn out for the Red Bull Joyride," says Darren Kinnaird, Crankworx Whistler General Manager. "There were well over 25,000 people lining the course on the mountain and packed into the plaza making this the largest crowd ever for a sporting event in Whistler. We saw amazing talent and dedication to the sport of slopestyle mountain biking today. To be able to expose these athletes to such a huge live crowd and on top of that, a huge audience tuned into the webcast, is an amazing opportunity that only comes at Crankworx."

Some tough breaks for crowd favourite Brandon Semenuk took him out of contention for a podium at Red Bull Joyride. Martin Söderström knew this would be his night to get back in the driver's seat. "I had so much pressure to be first in the world and with only one event left, the Red Bull Rampage, I am ready to jump on my DH bike and get the title," says Söderström. Although Genon had a super strong run that earned him the win, everyone on the podium agreed if Söderström could have cleanly executed the 360 double tail whip off the cabin, first place and the Red Bull Joyride title would have been in his hands.

Red Bull Joyride Results
First Place: Thomas Genon (Belgium) $25,000
Second Place: Martin Söderström (Sweden)$10,000
Third Place: Cam McCaul (USA) $5,000

Rider Inspired Slopestyle
Fusing elements of slopestyle, dirt jump, and North Shore mountain biking, Red Bull Joyride once again culminated into one gravity-fed, season-defining freeride mountain bike competition. This year’s course delivered more action, more riding, and less braking. With two new major features – a 60-foot gap and a 35-foot drop at the finish of the track - Red Bull Joyride course designer Paddy Kaye and his crew started working on the course in May. They sculpted, manicured, and slaved to shape a course that was the anchor for the ten-day spectacle known as Crankworx Whistler. Paddy relied on feedback from the top six riders from last year to give input on what they would like to see changed in 2012. The consensus was that the speed needed to be controlled a little more.

WHISTLER, BC August 17, 2012 – GIANT Dual Slalom Pro Men’s final went down in the Whistler Bike Park. Troy Brosnan was able to blaze through each ladder, consistently pinning it each heat to take gold over Luca Shaw in the finals. Melissa Buhl took gold in the Pro Women category with clean runs through each ladder, winning her first ever Crankworx event.

“It feels amazing, I’m coming back trying to have fun and get in a little training before Worlds,” said Troy Brosnan, winner of GIANT Dual Slalom. “It was a good night. The crowd was pretty big and that helped.”

In the Pro Men category Troy Brosnan (AUS) took first place, Luca Shaw (USA) came in second and Bas Van Steenbergen (CAN) finished in third.

Troy’s GIANT Dual Slalom win was fresh off of a second place finish in Thursday night’s Ultimate Pump Track Challenge. In both events Troy made it to finals, racing in every heat of each competition.

In the Pro Women category Melissa Buhl (USA) took first place, Micayla Gatto (CAN) came in second and Steffi Marth (GER) finished in third.

“It’s been a long week with a lot of events, so I feel really good about this win,” say Pro Women winner Melissa Buhl. “This is my first win at Crankworx and I couldn’t be happier.”

Now in its sixth season at Crankworx Whistler, the GIANT Dual Slalom is a crowd favourite. Thousands of fans lined the gated course and watched from the big screen in Whistler Village. The dual slalom head-to-head format featured riders in the pro and amateur categories pumping through a course riddled with rhythm sections, a mogul field, tight berms, jumps and drops.

Tomorrow’s action includes the most anticipated event at Crankworx Whistler, the Red Bull Joyride getting underway from 5:30-7:30pm. Both events will be live webcast at www.crankworx.com.

WHISTLER, BC August 19, 2012 –The Jeep Canadian Open Downhill was a rowdy affair today with an exhausting and technical descent that included running the gauntlet at Heckler’s Rock. With a time of 2:44.80 Steve Smith (CAD) was untouchable once again at Crankworx Whistler, crushing his competition and finishing almost five seconds faster than second place racer Mick Hannah (AUS) +4.64. Andrew Neethling (RSA) finished third fastest with +5.61.

With this win Steve Smith takes the triple-crown; winning first place in every DH event at Crankworx Whistler. Today’s victory at the Jeep Canadian Open DH is particularly sweet as he earns $10,000; the largest prize purse awarded at any DH race in the world. It is apparent Smith is on another level of racing and he is going into the seventh and final round of the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup DH in Hafjell Norway as a favourite to win.

The women’s podium was a sweep for Canadians with the fastest woman Casey Brown (CAD) coming in way ahead with a time of 3:15.28. Next up was Claire Buchar (CAD) at +9.81 and Lauren Rosser (CAD) +10.44.

With these wins, Smith and Brown also earned enough points to take the overall King and Queen of Crankworx titles. Local Whistler boy Jack Illes was awarded the Prince of Crankworx title for his outstanding performance in the Boys (13-16) category.

Coverage of the Jeep Canadian Open DH was phenomenal and included seven wired cameras on the ground, two cable cams and one helicopter camera, ensuring those watching the live webcast at home had front row seats. Some of the most entertaining footage came from Heckler’s Rock where hundreds of shirtless men (and some women) started to gather around 9am today.

The Jeep Canadian Open DH was the last event of Crankworx Whistler 2012. This year the festival enjoyed record-breaking crowds the entire ten days, as well as huge uptake on live webcast coverage powered by Red Bull Media House. Replays of the events live webcasted can be found at www.redbull.com/bike. Crankworx 2012 is a wrap, stay tuned for news about Crankworx 2013 dates for Les 2 Alpes in July and Whistler in August.

WHISTLER, BC August 12, 2012 – Crankworx Whistler’s Garbanzo DH is infamous for being the world’s longest DH track used in competition. Canadian World Cup racer Steve Smith has been defeated by the very long and technical track the last four times he has raced it; either crashing or just not going fast enough.

This year Smith finally defeated his nemesis, crossing the finish line with a time of 12:33.27, an impressive feat considering the length of the course is 12km and drops 3,400 vertical feet. Second fastest man was Columbian Marcelo Gutierrez Villega +5.48 and in third, Australian Chris Kovarik +15.40.

Canadian women swept the podium today with Casey Brown in first at 14:28.74, Miranda Miller in second +3.23 and Whistler’s Claire Buchar (CAD) +3.26.

“This is the first time I have had a clean run in competition on Garbanzo and I took the win,” says Smith. “It is a long race so you don’t absolutely ‘kill’ anything. I just kept a good pace all the way; I wasn’t really slow and I wasn’t really fast.”

This kind of race really tests the World Cup racers since they train to reach the maximum speed they can sustain for the duration of 3-4 minutes. The Garbanzo track has them descending three times as long as that. The most successful riders have to find the fastest pace they can sustain for a long period of time and just hang on. At the end of the day, the conditions couldn’t have been more ideal for the race. The track was rolling really quick and the clock showed it with athletes coming in with the fastest times ever recorded in Garbanzo DH competition.

Course Route
The same course as 2011 was used - Riders start behind the Garbanzo lift hut -> Original Sin (including the uphill section) -> exit Original Sin at the step down/step up tree island on the Dave Murray flats -> proceed down Blue Velvet -> traverse and proceed into In Deep -> after rock face turn left towards Container (FatCrobbat would require a right turn at this point) -> from Container into No Joke/ Duffman -> remain on Duffman until merges with Golden Triangle -> continue on World Cup Singletrack -> Ho Chi Min -> Longhorn -> Monkey Hands -> GLC drops to finish.
